What this tour is about: In this tour, we will visit a bustling local bazaar area in the heart of Kolkata. Built in 1874 as a posh “Whites Only" shopping complex, New Market today spills chaotically over to the adjoining streets, selling everything under the sun. The official name is Hogg’s Market; but it has always been called New Market because it replaced the older Fenwick’s Bazaar. Equally popular with both Indians and tourists, the New Market area offers not just great shopping, but also a chance to taste some of Kolkata's famous food.
How it works: On this tour, we'll spend a couple of happy hours shopping and eating our way through New Market. We will walk through markets selling vegetables and spices. We will taste Kolkata’s famous kathi rolls, visit an old Jewish bakery, and learn about Bengali cheeses and other surprising local delicacies. There are also many stalls and small restaurants offering New Market’s popular Mughlai cuisine. For shoppers, the market has many temptations: cotton and silk textiles, beautifully embellished scarves and stoles, ready-to-wear garments, handicrafts, curios, costume jewellery, bags and shoes. Please let the guide know your shopping interests, so she can figure out the best routes for the walk. You can also ask for help with figuring out appropriate prices.
